Does your pet have stinky breath? It’s more than bad breath, it’s periodontal disease!

Does your pet have stinky breath? It’s more than bad breath, it’s periodontal disease!

SIGNS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE IN YOUR PET INCLUDE:

  • Drooling
  • Bad breath
  • Tartar buildup
  • Decreased appetite
  • Inflammation or bleeding of the gums
  • Not wanting to be touched around the face or mouth

PERIODONTAL DISEASE CAN LEAD TO:

Endocarditis, an infection of the heart, as well as disease of the kidneys and liver. This is some serious stuff but don’t worry; there are things you can do to help keep your pet happy and healthy!

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME TO KEEP YOUR PET’S MOUTH HEALTHY?

There are a variety of products for maintaining good oral health including toys, treats, flavored toothpaste, oral sprays, and water additives. Look for products that have the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal of approval.

WHEN IS IT TIME FOR A PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING?

Providing good home care is a great start to ensuring proper oral health for your pet. However, your pet also needs to receive regular dental cleanings starting at age 3 (unless otherwise recommended by your veterinarian). A dental cleaning can really improve your pet’s oral health. WHAT DOES A PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING INCLUDE?

Professional dental cleanings are done with the pet under general anesthesia. This is a necessity for two reasons:

  1. Pets would not tolerate the level of cleaning being performed no matter how well behaved or trained they are
  2. Most periodontal diseases live under the gum line and need a thorough cleaning.
